Guyanese doctor wins US$2.5M Pioneer Award

SALT LAKE CITY A pioneering model that a University of Utah cardiologist proposes as a cause of heart disease is the kind of creative thinking the National Institutes of Health (NIH) likes to see—and reward with one of its most prestigious honors, a $2.5 million 2009 Pioneer Award.
Ivor J. Benjamin, M.D., professor of internal medicine and biochemistry and the Christi T. Smith Endowed Chair of Cardiovascular Research at the U of U School of Medicine, believes that one of the body’s most powerful antioxidants—molecules generally believed to protect the heart—actually might lead to disease in the heart and other organs when a gene mutation causes the body to overproduce the molecule. Dr Benjamin was born and grew up in Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara. He was schooled at Central High School in Smyth Street Georgetown, as did his sister Edris. This happened purely by accident. Getting ready for work one morning, I couldn’t find the headset for my iPhone. I was drawing a blank as to where I put it and with the clock ticking, I was all about panned out as to remembering where the thing was. My daughter was home from college at the time and had her cell phone on the couch with her headset attached. She has a Blackberry Pearl which used a 3.5mm jack. I took a second look at it and realized that functionally it looked the same as the iPhone’s headset. There was the button in the middle that turned the phone on and off and also served as the place where the microphone was mounted. 
So the world has now discovered that the man we know as Tiger Woods is (“gasp”) just another guy! What’s Tiger’s problem being a regular guy? Doesn’t he know he has to be perfect as his game? Doesn’t he know that there are people who look up to his impeccable character on and off the field as a role model for themselves, their children, their company, their world? Why does he have to sink so low?! The nerve of him!!! Yeah right. This is the same guy who has on games and off games. This is the same prodigy who sometimes make amateurs think they can beat him in some games. So we now discovers that like David, thousands of years ago, he has not only one mistress, but quite a few.
